Wine and Jazz Series

Here's another painting to add to my Wine and Jazz Series. Ahhh...John Coltrane...love him! What a shame when we loose such wonderful talent in our lives. At least he left so much behind for us to listen to and to feel his wonderful talent.

A nice addition to any Wine Rack

Official John Coltrane

John William Coltrane (sometimes abbreviated "Trane"; September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an  American Jazz saxophonist and  composer
Working in the bebop and Hard bop  idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and later was at the forefront of  free jazz. He was prolific, organizing at least fifty recording sessions as a leader during his recording career, and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, notably with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. He influenced innumerable musicians, and remains one of the most significant tenor saxophonists in jazz history. He received many awards, among them a posthumous Special Citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007 for his "masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz."

What fascinates me about these late Coltrane live recordings is the raw emotion, and this record is no exception.

John Coltrane
His father played several instruments sparking Coltrane’s study of E-flat horn and clarinet. While in high school, Coltrane’s musical influences shifted to the likes of Lester Young and Johnny Hodges prompting him to switch to alto saxophone. He continued his musical training in Philadelphia at Granoff Studios and the Ornstein School of Music. He was called to military service during WWII, where he performed in the U.S. Navy Band in Hawaii.
