Glad to see Selina Khan getting out of those pre-pubescent Teen Vogue images. These pictures are sexy and worthy of Elle or Vogue. Vogue China, the most multi-racially inclusive titles among the lots, should book her for an editorial, as long as they don't put her in an Indian theme story.

وفاة الدكتور مصطفى محمود

توفي صباح اليوم السبت 31 اكتوبر 2009 الساعة الثامنة صباحا الدكتور والفيلسوف الكبير مصطفى محمود عن عمر يناهز الـ 90 عاما بعد صراع سنوات طويلة مع المرض لم يتلق فيها الاهتمام الاعلامي الذي يليق به كواحد من المفكرين والفلاسفة العباقرة المصريين.
وكان العالم الدكتور مصطفى محمود قد ابتعد عن وسائل الاعلام بعد مرضه حيث كان يرقد بمستشفى تحمل اسمه الملحقة بجامع مصطفى محمود بالمهندسين.

وعرف الدكتور مصطفى محمود بتقديم البرنامج الديني العلم والايمان وقدم منه 400 حلقة كان يناقش فيها القضايا العلمية بوجهة نظر دينية وفكر ايماني، كما ان للدكتور مصطفى محمود مؤلفات وكتب كثيرة في المجال العلمي والفلسفي حيث الف قرابة 89 كتابا..
وكات حالة الدكتور مصطفى تدهورت جدا في الأونة الأخيرة من آثار نزيف قديم في المخ، ومنذ عام كان يعاني فقدان الذاكرة.

ولد الدكتور مصطفى كمال محمود حسين آل محفوظ، عام 1921ونسبه من الأشراف ، حيث ينتهي إلى عليّ زين العابدين وهو من مواليد شبين الكوم بمحافظة المنوفية، درس الطب وتخرج عام 1953 ولكنه تفرغ للكتابة والبحث...

يذكر أن للمفكر الكبير كتباً مثيرة للجدل والتى منها (محاولة لفهم عصري للقرآن) الذى أثار ضجة إعلامية كبيرة عند صدوره وحاوره فيه كبار علماء الدين، وبعض كتبه الأخرى مثل : الله والإنسان، الله، رأيت الله، من أسرار القرآن، الطريق إلى الكعبة، القرآن كائن حي، الإسلام ما هو؟، التوراة، محمد، لغز الموت، لغز الحياة.

المتهم بقتل مروة الشربيني يضرب راسه بالطاولة بعد اجباره على خلع قناع وجهة

قام اليكس المتهم بقتل الصيدلانية المصرية مروة الشربيني بافعال هستيرية اثر امر القاضية التي تنظر القضية بخلع غطاء وجهة عنوة عنه لاظهار ملامحه، فقام بضرب راسه بالطاولة وضرب الارض برجله في محاولة واضحة لابداء التصرفات الغير طبيعية وردود الافعال اللامنطقية..
وقد قام افراد الشرطة المحيطين به بمنعه بعد ان حاول كسر كل ما يحيط به مبديا حالة من الهيجان .. وقد تم استدعاء طبيب نفسى للجانى حيث قام بفحصه فى حجرة منفصلة فى الدور الأرضى للمحكمة ولم يعلن بعد عن نتائج فحص المتهم الذى بدا فى حالة عصبية وهستيرية لم يفهم هل هى بغرض التأثير على المحكمة أم بغرض ادعائه الخلل النفسى للافلات من العقاب.

وكان المتهم قد قتل مروة الشربيني في قاعة المحكمة بدريزدن بالمانيا وكان تسلسل الاحداث والقصة كالاتي منذ البداية :
1- طلبت مروة الشربيني من اليكس ان يترك الارجوحة لابنها ليلعب عليها.. ولكنه رد عليها بشتائم واتهامات عنصرية.. فقام المحيطون حولها بنصحها بطلب البوليس وعمل محضر
2- بعد عمل المحضر تم نظر القضية وحكم على الكس بـ 780 يورو غرامة
3- قدم اليكس طعنا في الحكم وعندما كان ينظر الحكم قام بالاعتداء على مروة وقتلها بسكين مطبخ عن طريق طعنها 16 طعنة
4- حاول زوج مروة الدفاع عنها وعندما امسك بالنصل دخل الى قاعة المحكمة رجل البوليس فاطلق النار على ساق زوج مروة واصابه في فخذه، ظنا منه انه صاحب الاعتداء.

وقد ظهر على زوج مروة اثناء نظر المحكمة رباطة الجأش والهدوء النسبي برغم ملامحهة الحزينة ...

استقالة وزير النقل محمد منصور من منصبة

قدم وزير القل والمواصلات السيد محمد لطفي منصور استقالته لاعفاءه من مهام منصبه كوزير الى السيد رئيس الوزراء احمد نظيف لرفعها بدوره الى السيد حسني مبارك رئيس الجمهورية الذي قام بدوره بقبولها ..
وتاتي استقالة وزير النقل بعد 3 ايام من حادث قطار العايط المؤسف الذي اودى بحياة العشرات، وقد اعلن الوزير السابقة مسؤوليته السياسية عن الحادث.

وكان الدكتور مفيد شهاب قد اعترف بمسؤولية الحكومة الجزئية عن الحادث برغم من احالة 34 من مسؤولي السكة الحديد الى التحقيق.

One more thing: The bone in the film is a wishbone:

The wishbone, known in anatomy as the furcula, is a sternum bone found in birds which is shaped like the letter Y. It is used as an attachment point for the wing muscles. It is so named because of a tradition: Two people pull on each side of such a bone, and when it breaks, the one who gets the larger part is said to have a wish granted.

The mechanical sculpture in the film is by Arthur Ganson. Some of his stuff is really awe-inspiring. Check this Machine with Artichoke Petal #2



Of course, it may bring to mind other art machines (Rebecca Horn, but also manyothers), but what I really appreciate here is the simplicity. Modest art is something to be cherished. It also reminds me of some of the musical experiences by the Portuguese musician Nuno Rebelo:

رفض طلب محامي قاتل مروة الشربيني برد هيئة المحكمة

قررت الهيئة المختصة بفحص طلب هيئة الدفاع عن المتهم بقتل مروة الشربيني برفض طلب محامية بنقل مكان المحاكمة الى مكان اخر حيث شكك فى نزاهة القضاء لاحتمال التواطؤ مع هيئة القضاء التى كانت مشاركة فى حادثة مقتل مروة الشربينى بالحجرة المجاورة فى نفس المحكمة.

وقد حضر المتهم الى قاعة المحكمة مكبل اليدين والقدمين وملثما في محاولة الى اخفاء وجهة عن الاعلام، وقد استمر في اخفاء وجهة برغم مطالبة القاضي له باظهار وجهة مما ترك انطباعا سيئا لدى هيئة المحكمة.

وقد قام الجاني المعروف باليكس -29 عاما- بقتل مروة الشربيني بسكين داخل قاعة المحكمة بطعنها 18 طعنة أثناء نظر استئناف ضد حكم صادر بالغرامة في حقه بسبب تعديه بألفاظ عنصرية عليها قبل ذلك.

يذكر ان مروة الشربيني هي ابنة الاسكندرية وقد انشئ باسمها جمعية خيرية في المانيا ومن المنتظر اطلاق اسمها على احد شوارع الاسكندري، بينما عرفت واطلق عليها اسم ( شهيدة الحجاب ).

في سلسلة لتبادل الهجوم الاعلامي والفضائح نشرت مؤخرا قناة مودرن سبورت فيديو توضح فيه اخطاء وفاضئح وجميع خلافات وخناقات علاء صادق مثل تهكمه على رئيس الوزراء وخلافه مع حسن شحاتة ...
وياتي ذلك بعد ان قام علاء صادق بتقديم استقالته على الهواء مباشرة في سابقة هي الاولى من نوعها بسبب خلاف من المعتقد ان يكون بينه وبين نبيل دعبس مدير القناة ومدحت شلبي المذيع بالقناة ويعتقد ايضا ان الخلاف كان حول النتيجة التي تحتاجها مصر للتاهل لكاس العالم في مباراة الجزائر يوم 14 نوفمبر القادم...

Fat Quarter Madness!

Guess what I did today?

My first task towards the end of the week was to prepare fabrics for the commission piece I'm doing. While I've promised not to post photos of the work in progress, I don't think it hurts to show you the fabrics.

The above three pieces were painted with Dye-Na-Flow fabric paints. They were a tremendous pain in the tush to color set, but after many runs through a hot dryer and some ironing, I managed to keep most of the color from washing out in the machine.

Along with these vibrant yellow/orange/red pieces, I've also finished a blue-to-teal gradation as a compliment.

The quiet, slow task of hand-dyeing fabrics always makes me feel a bit like an Earth Mother. Something about the feel of stiff white muslin in my hands, the puddles of jewel-toned dyes, the lengthy wash-out, hanging yardage outside to dry on the line- it all adds up to long, tiring days that leave me utterly blissed out and feeling connected to the women across the ages who labored similarly.

The weekend so far has been filled with such activity, and the days are perfect for it- sunny, dry, breezy and cool.

Today was spent washing-out, drying and pressing the results of a 30-step, 3-color gradation kit I bought at the ProChem booth of the IQF.

The kit I used was called "Prism", and is aptly named, as you can tell by the photos. The colors contained were the three primaries: lemon yellow, magenta, and what ProChem calls "Intense Blue".

It yielded 30 fat quarters (four yards of bleached, mercerized muslin that measured 108" from selvedge to selvedge- I got 8 pieces out of each yard) in a rainbow of jewel-toned colors. I'm very pleased with the result and now I have to get down to work and produce some quilts!

 

 Finally, I finished quilting this post card for Mom. The piece was painted in one of my IQF classes. She received it yesterday and yes, she loved it.

Next week I'll be spending much of my time at the sewing machine. Hope this old back holds out!

The right and the rights

So how was it for YOU?

Not all of Robert Grigolov's work convinces me. Some of it seems like simple tricks pour épater les bourgeois. But isn't part of the fun about discovering the value something has for you when taking out of a context which isn't necessarily one you appreciate?

Why does the above installation have the title Dollar Bill? I don't know. I have some ideas, but I don't think I want to follow them. And, just as Daniel Pennac's 10 Inalienable Rights of the Reader, so any spectator has similar rights, among them, to decide arbitrarily where the work begins and ends for her.


This doesn't need to mean any sort of glorification of ignorance. However, it does accept it as part of the deal. After all, the spectator is no less free than the artist, is he?


This should be a very obvious question. Aesthetic relativism is something seemingly accepted. Yet the contemporary art world seems to specialize in "right" ways of looking at its creations.
Anything goes - yet there is still plenty of exciting space for dialogue. Tastes are indeed something we discuss and shape, aesthetic experience is a beautifuly shapeable thing. And yet one of the most difficult things is to stay within the play of common value-seeking and exploration of personal experience, and not move into the discourse of competence, the universe of authority, which might sustain a big chunk of what the contemporary art world is about, but is hardly enjoyable for those of us who like their artflesh stupendously raw and intimate.
