Catch! ~~ by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Catch!," 9" x 14", portrait of a yellow lab, done in Golden Open Acrylics on an Ampersand Gessobord. Add this painting - and a big grin - to your collection for $599. Inquiries may come to me.

Despite a day fraught with interruptions - the phone, carpools, a furiously barking dog, and a myriad of other events trying to draw me astray - I finished my painting. A rather ambitious one to boot. Doesn't matter that it's the nth hour. I'm very pleased with myself.

Seems extra fitting that I also was reading something today about unabashedly allowing your happiness to shine. This girl has that part down - we could all take a lesson from her!

Meanwhile, I'm off to bed - looks like tomorrow could be a repeat of today.

Thanks, as always, for looking at and sharing my paintings with your friends and family,
Kim

Last winter one of my Dog-a-Day paintings earned first place in a Richeson 75 exhibition. This prize came with a wonderful gift certificate towards Jack Richeson art supplies.

My first box arrived today, packed with a huge variety of brushes and other goodies. My fistful (above) represents just a few of my new tools. I think I'm set with brushes for a little bit......

Thank you, Jack Richeson & Co for your generousity!

Spring Creek, oil and sunblock on canvas by Margaret Aycock

I tried to get a group together to go to the creek with me and ended up with just my husband and me ( he is that cute figure at the edge of the water )  We had all the makings of a relaxing afternoon; books to read, a fresh canvas, paints and mineral spirits.  I ended up knocking the spirits over and found that sunblock lotion does a pretty dang good job as a medium and brush cleaner:-)  This is a little 8x10 sketch that I did that day.  I will have it in my ebay gallery.  I have a ton of paintings on auction this week.  Feel free to check them out.  click here to go to my ebay galleryclick here to go to my blog

Carribbean Welcome Watercolor Painting

Carribbean Welcome - 9 x 12 inches on Arches 140 pound paper.   Another one done during the after math of Hurricane Irene with a generator to power my studio light.   This was a photo reference from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event - I can't remember the date - but I had saved it to do and found it trying to decide what to paint.   It just looked so inviting to me.   Unlike Hurricane Irene.

Me, I'm still waitin' for Hurricane Ed.
Old Ed wouldn't hurt ya, would he?
Sounds kinda friendly. 'Hell no, we ain't evacuatin'.
Ed's comin'!"

We just arrived home from spending a really lovely time in San Miguel de Allende.

I found this pretty embroidered blouse and two beautiful

The blouse came in that cute market tote with a pretty paper flower.

Such a nice detail from the shop isn't it?

Makes you want to go back there and shop some more :)

For Her Eyes Only, from The Saratoga Series ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"For Her Eyes Only," 5" x 7", the latest addition to my "Saratoga Series" of paintings, portrait of a Thoroughbred Racehorse, done in Golden Open Acrylics on an Ampersand Gessobord (see my reference material at left). Add this painting to your collection for $289. Inquiries may come to me.

Yesterday, Three Chimneys Farm (a Thoroughbred racehorse breeding facility) shared a photo of a 2 year old filly on their Facebook page. I was immediately struck by her unique markings (see the skull shape in her blaze?), and wanted to paint her.

I did a little research, and discovered she was currently in Saratoga, New York - even handily won her first race yesterday!

I sent a emails to friends who were in the Saratoga area - were they planning on going to the track soon, and if so, could they keep an eye out for her?

Meanwhile, this afternoon, I pulled up my own references (I wanted to paint a gorgeous dark bay wearing a plaid cooling sheet, a horse I photographed during my recent visit to Saratoga), and what did I discover?

Photos of For Her Eyes Only, being hotwalked after her morning bath, just ahead of that dark bay in the plaid cooling sheet.

Serendipitous, no?

Thanks, as always, for looking at and sharing my paintings with your friends and family,
Kim

PS Might I add that there was no attribution to the photo as originally posted on FB. With that in mind, I opted not to include it by means of anything other than a link to the source, since I had no means of acquiring permission or acknowledging the photographer.

My (copywritten) photo, taken at Saratoga, in July 2011.

Copyright Respect

I can hear the questions now - why didn't I just paint from the photo I first saw on Facebook?

Easy.

I didn't take the photo.

Which means I didn't have permission to use it, even if I was only using it for something derivative like a painting.

The photographer automatically owns the copyright, whether said photographer is professional or amateur. (Copyrights don't just apply to authors/artists.)

That said, I can only use photographs as reference material with explicit permission from the photographer.

No matter where I come across those images.

Magazines, blogs, websites, even Facebook, are all off limits. It doesn't need to have a copyright watermark on it to be protected, either - if you didn't take the photo yourself, it belongs to someone else.

So unless you have written permission to use a photo - or even a portion of it - steer clear.

Life is too short to spend time dealing with accusations of copyright infringement.

The Curl

In one of my last posts, I talked a bit about some aluminum flashing that I've been painting and collaging onto.

Another trip to Lowes last week turned up large, flat, pre-cut sheets of aluminum of a heavier grade than the flashing, and I'm happy to report that after a good sanding, this stuff makes an amazing substrate for mixed-media work!

(Untitled, 24" x 24" Aluminum, Monoprinted Stacked Journaling, Collage, Acrylics)

This piece consists of layers and layers and layers of monoprinted Stacked Journaling in black, white, purple, orange and yellow acrylic paint. More layers of transparent paint glazes were then applied, wiped off and reapplied until I was happy with the background. I collaged deli papers painted with more SJ to the surface and then brought the whole thing together with one final glaze of paint.

It will be hung by drilling wood screws directly through the front of the piece into wooden blocks which will be positioned on the back. A hanging wire will then be strung from the wooden blocks. Yes, I know I will have to go directly through the painting and collage to achieve this- no worries, that was always my intent when working with the aluminum: I love the industrial look of it.

You'll have to excuse the poor photo quality, however- I usually roll up my garage door to photograph work on my design wall with indirect sunlight, but it's hummingbird season and yesterday when I rolled up the door, three of the little guys flew in for a visit and a snoop around, and got stuck in my studio for almost four hours!

I will have to leave the door down until they stop flocking, which could take another couple of months. So my photos are catch-as-catch-can for the moment!

Also in my last post I discussed Curl, a 3-D art object I was creating with the roll of aluminum flashing. I finished it over the weekend and I love it!

It is nearly six feet in length, and measures 10" from top to bottom.

It is two sided- orange-y/avocado on one side...

... and yellow/green on the other...

These pieces were done almost exactly like the piece at the top of this post, but I eliminated the heavy glazing in favor of letting the metal shine through in the background.

It turns out that Curl requires certain conditions to be displayed properly, though... specifically, it needs to be lit either from directly above or directly beneath the piece, otherwise the curve of the flashing causes heavy shadows inside the piece and the two-sided effect is lost.

However, this was so much fun to make, and turned out so well, that I'll be creating more of them. In the meantime, my husband and I want to display it and since we don't have a good pedestal for it, we will hang it as you see above, as one long piece stretched across the wall. We will mount it to the wall using mirror clips so we won't damage either side in the hanging process.

Happy creating!

Gilcrease Museum Home, 8x10 oil by Margaret Aycock

Gilcrease Museum is just around the corner from my home. I love to go there for what is inside the museum and what is outside, on the grounds. This is the side of the house where the Gilcrease family used to live back in the 20's. It is a little sketch which I just posted to my ebay auction with a starting price of $39 ( a steal! ) To place a bid or to see the 100+ paintings in my ebay gallery, click here

Red and White Still LIfe Watercolor Painting

Red and White Still Life watercolor painting is 9 X 12.  It is SO good to be back on-line, with all the things that plug into the walls working after Hurricane Irene.   I did this using a generator my son in law connected - I just wasn't able to post it until today.   Sometime during the night our power was restored.  Oh, we take so much for granted.....

Self

Self-portrait sketch

I mustered all my nerve to share this.

I'm sketching for a self-portrait.

Much idealized... I am not as young or pretty.

Going to do it in watercolor and hopefully finish it
