Baby Moo ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Baby Moo," 5" square, Golden Open Acrylics on artists' Ampersand gessobord, depicting a young Holstein calf. This painting can be added to your collection for $239 - inquiries may come to me.

Remember our trip earlier this week to Cook's Dairy Farm? This is one of the little fellas we hung out with for a bit. I'm sharing my reference photo below, so that you can see my source of inspiration.

Thanks for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Future Dragon Slayer?

For generations, citizens of Lake Orion (my hometown) have told the story of a dragon living in the depths of our lake.

We even have a summer festival that pays homage to her - with dragon boat races, tours of historic lakeside homes, sidewalk chalk contests, and an art exhibition.

It's time for me to start my dragon painting - but I need your help finding my muse.

I want to do a larger than life puppy/dog, accompanied by a toy dragon. In keeping with the tradition of the dragon myth, the dog must have an expressive face that tells legions of stories. (I already have the dragon - you simply need to supply the puppy!)

You may nominate your puppy by sending non-flash photos to me by July 17th.

Photos submitted must be of your own taking. By virtue of submission, you are granting me permission to create derivative artwork at any point in the future.

I'll update submissions on the studio's facebook page every couple days.

Thanks so much for helping me out!

It's almost the weekend again!  The times seems to be flying by and here we have a holiday weekend.  Hope to get to the beach with a friend and relax a bit.  This painting is done on a multi-media board that I have used before.  It is pretty cool as it has a resin in it that makes it possible to frame is without glass.  Panels and canvas always work without glass but oils on paper require glass over it to protect the painting over time.  Anyway, bluebirds are a lovely subject and are a pleasure to paint!  Wish I could see more in my yard but can't say that I have ever seen one.  Just finished up my newsletter today...really finished just in the nick of time for the month's end.  If you have not subscribed, just enter your name at the top right corner and I will send off a copy to you!  There are savings involved!!!  Thanks so much for your continued support.  I am not sure I will post unless I finish something tomorrow when I paint with Scott and Barbara. Hope you have a wonderful 4th!!

Carol

Pastel portrait of a woman in gardening gear.

Pastel painting 13 inches x 14 inches

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

I painted this pastel portrait the week before our trip out west. Carol came all decked out in garden wear so in my figure drawing of her, I envisioned her in a lovely, plant-filled location.

I recorded a video today in the making of this drawing, it's one of the ways I approach drawing a head and it should give you more insight of my methods, I think it went around 1hr and 15 minutes to make this sketch but I had to drastically reduce or better put 'speed up' the video so it actually fits the standards of online viewing.

I love painting blue things.  I guess I just love blue...I am not sure why but I have collected, over the years, a bunch of blue stuff.  I should do a series of it I think!  Hmmm, thinking....

As always, thanks for being a part of my blogging process.

KMA2658 Movement in Red by Kit Hevron Mahoney (abstract, contemporary art, original oil painting)

This painting took me on a joyous journey as I created it. I had a landscape that I overworked on this canvas and finally let it go to work in the abstract with color, shape and textures. Some of the underlying colors from the landscape give it effects that I would never have been able to imagine doing.

Annie, A Painted Sketch ~~ by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Annie," image approximately 8" square on an 8" x 10" paper, Golden Open Acrylics on artists' multimedia board. This is a commissioned pet portrait depicting a wonderfully lucky Standard Poodle.

Annie was brought by a rescue group to my clients, a family known for their love of poodles. The rescue group was looking for a foster home that would allow them to get to know Annie better while looking for her new forever home.

Little did the rescue know, but Annie had already found her new home. She lasted a whole 5 hours as a foster dog before completely winning over the hearts of my clients and becoming best friends with their two other dogs.

Her family are proud foster flunkies, and she's a jolly, goofy, delightful addition to their household.

Thanks for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.
Kim

Western Still Life

Plein air pastel still life painting of an elk skull, flowers and stone wall.

Plein air watercolor painting 6. 5 inches x 10 inches

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

The lodge at Bonanza Creek is comfortable and inviting. It's surrounded on one side by a stone wall with western paraphernalia arranged among the rocks. One day, after riding, I decided to do what I rarely do: a watercolor still life. Granted, the elements are a little different from the usual apples, lemons and wine bottles. But it seemed appropriate for this Michigan artist visiting Montana!

Stacked Journaling in a New Way

Well, I sure hope you're all not utterly sick of seeing more Stacked Journaling, because I have been developing it steadily over the months and I love the current direction it's taking in my painting and mixed-media work!

A few weeks ago, I began composing SJ art letters by squeezing paint directly onto my substrate out of a bottle that employs a fine, metal tip screwed to its spout. This gave me tremendous freedom not only to be able to use all of the various paint mediums at my disposal, but also to be able to write in many different scales, from very large to very small.

One afternoon while composing a Stacked Journaling letter in this manner, I began to get frustrated with the paint I was using: I'd thickened it too much and it was getting blobby and heavy on the canvas. I grabbed a piece of deli paper, carefully placed it on top of the painted SJ, blotted with the lightest pressure, and lifted the paper away. POOF, I'd discovered Monoprinted Stacked Journaling. It was as if someone had hit me with a sledgehammer and my heart started galloping in my chest.

I've been obsessively using monoprinting with my painted SJ ever since.

In this piece, a 16" x 20" stretched canvas, I layered multiple monoprints of SJ in white, lemon yellow and golden yellow Neopaque paint on top of a painted background of soft yellows. A polishing of violet textile paint came next, and finally, one last bold stripe of monoprinted SJ in magenta brings the piece into focus.

To create the monoprints, I Journaled in paint onto strips of parchment paper, turned them over, and carefully pressed them onto the canvas. Using parchment allows me to wrap the SJ around the edges of the canvas, giving it an even more finished look. Here are those lovely, leftover parchment strips hanging on my design wall (I wish I could actually reuse them in my work, but being parchment, the paint will never adhere to the paper.)

In a wonderfully mysterious way, the Stacked Journaling plays hide-and-seek with the eye, fading in and out through the transparent layers of paint. The text, while perfectly obscured for privacy, still nonetheless reads as very deliberate and directed text (which it is), rather than as simple scribbles.

I think it's about time to take this technique to something larger, like a gallery-sized canvas or a couple of yards of fabric!

Happy creating!
